Ilford Cleaner is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to preventing accidents, injuries and ill health, and to promoting safe working practices across all cleaning activities and service locations.
Our main objectives are to prevent work related injuries and ill health, to comply with applicable health and safety legislation, and to continually improve our standards. We aim to identify hazards, assess risks and implement effective controls for all cleaning tasks, whether carried out on client premises, in shared buildings or in common areas such as offices, shops and residential blocks.
We seek to integrate health and safety considerations into all aspects of planning, scheduling and delivering cleaning services, so that safe working becomes a natural part of our everyday activity.
Management at Ilford Cleaner has overall responsibility for ensuring that this policy is implemented and reviewed on a regular basis. Managers will provide the leadership, resources and supervision needed to maintain safe systems of work and safe use of cleaning equipment and products.
Management responsibilities include carrying out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for cleaning operations, ensuring that control measures are put in place, monitoring performance, investigating incidents and taking corrective action where necessary. Managers will also ensure that employees receive appropriate induction and ongoing training in health and safety procedures.
All employees and contractors working on behalf of Ilford Cleaner share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment. Every member of staff must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.
Employees are expected to follow all safety instructions and training, use cleaning chemicals, equipment and personal protective equipment correctly, report hazards, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions without delay, and cooperate fully with any health and safety investigations or improvement measures.
Risk assessments are carried out for typical cleaning tasks and for specific client sites where needed. These assessments consider hazards such as slips and trips, working at height for tasks like high level dusting, manual handling of equipment and waste, exposure to cleaning chemicals, use of electrical equipment, and lone working on client premises.
Safe working procedures are developed from these assessments and communicated to all relevant staff. Where appropriate, work methods are adapted to minimise risks, for example by using colour coded cloths and mops to reduce cross contamination, using non slip warning signs in wet areas, and avoiding unnecessary manual lifting by using trolleys or other aids.
Cleaning chemicals are selected and used with care to minimise health risks and environmental impact. All substances are assessed under relevant control of substances regulations and staff are trained to follow instructions on labels and data sheets.
Chemicals are stored securely, kept in original containers with clear labels, and only decanted when necessary using safe procedures. Employees are instructed never to mix chemicals, to use the correct dilutions, and to ensure adequate ventilation when using stronger products. Any skin or respiratory irritation must be reported immediately so that work methods can be reviewed.
All equipment supplied by Ilford Cleaner, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines and other tools, is maintained in safe working order and inspected regularly. Defective or damaged equipment must be reported and taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, aprons, eye protection or safety footwear, is provided where risk assessments identify a need. Employees must use this equipment correctly and look after it with reasonable care. Replacement PPE is made available when items are worn or damaged.
All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during cleaning work must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. Records are kept and reviewed to identify patterns and areas for improvement.
Emergency procedures are communicated to staff for the sites they work on, including fire evacuation routes, assembly points and the location of first aid provisions. Employees must familiarise themselves with client site rules and cooperate with any emergency drills or instructions given by building management or emergency services.
Health and safety training is an integral part of employment with Ilford Cleaner. New starters receive induction training covering general safety rules, safe use of equipment and chemicals, and reporting procedures. Additional task specific training is provided where required, for example for use of specialist machinery or working in higher risk areas.
Information is provided through written instructions, toolbox talks and refresher sessions. Supervisors monitor working practices and provide guidance and correction where necessary to make sure safe standards are maintained at all times.
Ilford Cleaner encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and take part in discussions about safer ways of working. Feedback from staff and clients is reviewed and used to improve our procedures and controls.
This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legal requirements or best practice guidance. Updates are communicated to employees so that everyone understands their role in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment.
This policy applies to all employees and contractors of Ilford Cleaner and covers all cleaning activities and locations in which we operate. Management is responsible for ensuring that the contents of this document are implemented in practice and that suitable monitoring is carried out to check its effectiveness.
By working together and following the principles and procedures outlined in this Health and Safety policy, Ilford Cleaner aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of staff, clients and the wider community.
